Let’s Talk Bookish: Participating in discussion posts

I usually prepare the bulk of a discussion post the week of its posting. So for these ‘Let’s Talk Bookish’ posts, I’ll often do a draft on Monday and then let it sit for the next few days until sometime on Thursday when I’ll tidy it up or add any extra thoughts that cropped up over the week. Sometimes I do get busy, and the draft sits there until I remember I was meant to post it and I’ll very quickly finish it up on the Friday and put it live. I think that is one of the good things about discussion posts though – you have the flexibility to do that! When I was in my exam season, I wrote up and scheduled a couple in advance whenever I had a free hour or two.

This depends on the prompt(s) in question for me. Sometimes a single overarching question is great, and you can just run with it and write a bunch and maybe also give some book recommendations too. A question on fantasy series for example might not need to have multiple parts to it – explain what you like and give recommendations!

However, I do find that I prefer overall to have one or two (or more!) prompts for a topic that is not quite so straightforward. I have a lot of thoughts generally, and I sometimes find it difficult to explain them succinctly, or separate them out into digestible pieces. By having a guide on how to organise what I am trying to say, I find I can write more, and write it in a way that reads easily.

I love discussion posts – both reading and writing them, so for me personally, the more the merrier. I will admit that I was sad to see LTB leave the weekly format behind, I actually haven’t been amazing at keeping up in recent months, so having a monthly topic gives some wiggle room. That being said, I have been discovering other blogs hosting discussions, so there is definitely more for me to explore and add in to my rotation as and when I do find the time!

  1. Great post, Emma! I’m honestly amazed by people who are organized enough to prepare posts in advance or that have the energy to even post at the last minute during busy times. I truly wish that could be me, haha.

As co-host of LTB, I was also admittedly a bit sad to cut down the weekly schedule but life has truly been life-ing this year. 🤡 Who knows what’ll happen in the future though—maybe we’ll revert back to the weekly schedule if we have more time… That said, you’re more than welcome to check out our archive, and if there are topics that intrigue you, please feel free to keep posting weekly LTBs! 😄 Thanks for joining in this month’s discussion! 💜

    1. If I didn’t pre-write things, nothing would ever get posted haha! My brain does not do well remembering to do things like that unless I cover my monitor in sticky notes!

This year seems to have been ramped up for everyone! I’ve been so busy that I’ve been late with quite a few posts the last few months, so monthly is probably a blessing! As you’ve said though, there is such a huge back catalogue that I’ll definitely find something to write about if I want to!
