Let’s Talk Bookish: Festive Reads.

Hello, happy Friday!
I am resting and recovering from surgery this week, so I’m looking forward to having the time to actually read everyone’s LTB posts on time for once!

I am one of those people who generally doesn’t theme their reads to the time of year. Occasionally I do, I enjoy something a little spookier in October, for example, but generally I just read whatever I like. I think this is fairly common among people who read primarily speculative fiction, because these sorts of books usually don’t subscribe to the typical ‘holiday read’ vibes.

As such, I don’t have any on my tbr for this winter. I do actually have a book called Frostlines that I want to get to, which is a non-fiction about the Arctic, but aside from there being snow in that environment that’s about as holiday themed as it gets.

As I said, I don’t really theme my reading, however, if I were to recommend some books I have read that would be great for this time of year they would be:

  • A Midwinter’s Tail by Lili Hayward
  • Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik
  • Hogfather by Terry Pratchett

These three books are ones I have particularly loved over the years and have a very definite winter or holiday theme.

  2. I also don’t hugely theme my reads and I generally don’t particularly like festive-themed books but I do feel like some books benefit from being read at a certain time of year – not that I wouldn’t read them at a different time of year, just that I appreciate them more when read in one season over another. For example, Wintering by Katherine May is very much suited to crisp late-autumn or winter weather and I really enjoyed listening to it whilst walking through the park to class or work. I don’t think I would’ve felt the same atmosphere if I’d read it on a sweltering day in August.

    1. I definitely agree that some reads are better at certain times of the year. I feel the same sort of way about Circe. I just don’t think I could read it in the summer, the windy and golden autumn day I read it on just worked for it!

      1. Ooh I’ll have to keep that in mind for when I eventually pick it up!

  3. I hope your rest and recovery from surgery is going smoothly! I’m also not much of a seasonal reader myself but for some reason, this time of year always feels like an exception—even if I live in the tropics and literally nothing indicates a new season is upon us in other parts of the world 😂 I’ve been meaning to re-read Spinning Silver but that’s defo a great rec! Thanks for joining LTB this week and I hope you feel better soon, Emma! 💜

    1. Thanks Dini, I’m doing well 😀
Well I guess it’s a signifier of festivities then, if the weather won’t help you out there! I also need to re-read Spinning Silver, but maybe next year.
