I saw this over on @Laurie is Reading and thought it looked a lot of fun, so here we go!
How many books have you read so far?
Storygraph says I have read 34 books so far in 2025. That’s actually surprising to me, I thought I had read less, but I guess February really boosted those numbers!
Have you found a book that you think might be a 2025 favourite?
Yes! A couple actually. Water Moon by Samantha Sotto Yambao and Gorse by Sam K. Horton are both going to be making my top books of the year list.
Any least favourite book of the year?
I always DNF books I am not enjoying and therefore don’t count them in my books of the year, but for this question I will. I DNFed Pod by Laline Paul. I just could not get into it, reading felt like a chore.
Other books I finished but didn’t really vibe with were Nature is Never Silent by Madlen Ziege (good but not for me) and Orbital by Samantha Harvey (review here).
Most read genre?
Fantasy! 12 of my reads have been fantasy, with science fiction following at 7. Non fiction sits at 5 books, and the rest are a mix of other fiction genres.
A book that surprised me?
And So I Roar by Abi Daré. This is the sequel to The Girl with the Louding Voice and I read it for The Climate Fiction Prize. I unexpectedly… loved is not the right word given the subject matter, but it has really stuck with me and I think about it quite a lot still.
A book that has come out in 2025 that I haven’t yet read?
Quite a few! The one highest on my list at the moment is Faithbreaker by Hannah Kaner (and yes I do also need to read books 2 first…).
I also have The River Has Roots by Amal El-Mohtar and The Dream Hotel by Laila Lalami on my shelves.
One goal you made that you’re succeeding at?
Reading more diversely. I am really pleased that more than half of my books are LGBTQIA+, just under half have disability rep, 1/3 are non UK/USA, 1/3 are POC, and 2/3 are woman authored.
One goal that you need to focus on?
My reading challenges! Bingo has only just started again, to be fair, but usually I’d have read at least one book by now! Hopefully in May I can check a few off there!
