Let’s Talk Bookish: Do blog tours build community?

Happy Friday! It’s been a hectic week here as we’ve been trying to sort ourselves out between family visiting us and then us going away! My posts next week are mostly drafted and scheduled, so if I don’t get to comments right away, it’s because I’m in the wilds of Wales!

Our final topic for April is all about community & book tours.

I have only ever participated in one blog tour, but I do Instagram tours more often. The main reason I enjoy them is because I like getting an author’s new book out there. I am lucky to have great followers over on IG who interact with my posts, so I know that they will see the review and hopefully check out the book further. It’s also fun to ‘meet’ other reviewers who share the same reading tastes!
Personally, there isn’t anything I dislike about tours, but then I only join them occasionally so as not to put too much pressure on myself.

I do because I choose to believe that people are inherently honest. I am sure there are those out there who give falsely positive reviews, but I take what people say at face value, so if someone says they enjoyed a book, I usually believe them!

I also tend to follow people who I know have similar tastes to myself, and over time you do get to know what they like and their own tastes from reading non-tour reviews, so again, I tend to trust them!

I definitely do over on Instagram. Shamefully, I didn’t with the one blog tour here (life got hectic), but I do think they help to foster community. Not everyone is going to become your best bookish friend, but I do know that I have met some fab people on here whose blogs I enjoy reading!

  2. I don’t go on Instagram too much so I kind of forgot tours are also a thing over there, too!

    1. It’s where I do most of them! Usually directly from the publishers.

  3. Great post! I didn’t realise that blog tours on Instagram were a big thing because I don’t spend as much time on there anymore. However, I do participate in my share through my blog, although I don’t find it nearly as easy to connect with others through it. I think it is a great opportunity depending on how others engage with you too!

Thanks for participating in LTB this week. Hope you’re having fun in the wilds of Wales!

    1. I definitely get more engagement over on Instagram, but I have been building my community over there for a couple of years now. I do tours there directly from publishers rather than tour companies so it is a little different but still fun!

  4. Same I choose to believe the reviews and I most follow people who I’ve got similar taste with or I enjoy their content! I don’t really do instagram, but I love the aesthetics of book lovers there 🙂 Absolutely the hectic life got to me haha can totally relate to this statement!

    1. Yes! I just don’t see the point of being untruthful – even if you don’t like something, publishers are usually always graceful about letting you bow out and never hold it against you!

      1. Exactly, at the end of the day, they want our honest opinion, and this includes the negative ones too.
