NonFiction November: My Year in Nonfiction

โ€”

Long time no post!
Yes, hello, I am back in time for Nonfiction November! I’ll do an update post soon to share what I have been reading and doing while I was away, but for now I want to jump right in to this!

The Nonfiction November blog event runs for 4 weeks with a new prompt each Monday.

Week 1 is hosted by Heather at Based on a True Story.

  • What nonfiction books have you read this year?
  • What were your favourites?
  • Did you find yourself reading a particular category of nonfiction most often?

This year I have read 12 NonFiction books so far, which is less than last year, but the quality has been great. I’ve read 70 books overall, though, so perhaps more could have been nonfiction if I had been more aware!

My favourite from this year so far is definitely Ancient by Luke Barley. I am thrilled that it won the Nature Writing category in this year’s Wainwright Prize, it was so well deserved.

Other favourites are Boglands by Merritt Turetsky, When the Forest Breathes by Suzanne Simard, and Beauty of the Beasts by Jo Wimpenny. I highly recommend all three!

As usual, 99% of my reads have been based on the natural world. There are so many different categories of nonfiction out there that I would like to explore, but being at university while also working means my time is sadly quite limited. As a result, I am focusing more on what I truly love (nature), and even more so on books that look at plants in some way, since my degree is in botany! I have a lot of plant non-fiction on my list, and hopefully I can get through more of them this month!

Do you read nonfiction books? Have you got a 2026 favourite yet?

  1. It turns out I’ve only read two nonfiction books so far this year (I don’t read loads, but that’s slacking a bit!) – my favourite is England: A Natural History, I really liked the writing in that one ๐Ÿ™‚
