2026 New Year’s Book Tag

I set my reading goal to 36 books this year. I was actually going to set it at 10 and then forget about it because I didn’t want any pressure to read for the numbers. After a little thought, I decided on 36, since my current average is 3 books per month. I know over the summer break I’ll be reading a lot more, so I am certain this will be fine to have ticking along in the background. And if it gets to November and I’m way behind, I am not above changing it at all.

So many. I was great at starting stuff last year and then not so great at finishing things. I also got sent a fair amount of books, so stuff just piled up quite a bit once I started university. These are 5 I have on my priority list for 2026:

  • Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands by Heather Fawcett
  • Black Water Sister by Zen Cho
  • Nature’s Ghosts by Sophie Yeo
  • The Unmaking of June Farrow by Adrienne Young
  • Groundbreakers by Chantal Lyons

I had a good time mixing up my genres last year. While I don’t want to neglect fantasy, I do want to make non-fiction more of a priority. I’ve also been really into climate fiction over the last year, so that is really high on my radar, along with adding in some more mystery books. Honestly, I think the more I can vary things, the better it will be!

I don’t really set personal goals. As with my reading goal, I tend to find if I put pressure on myself to do something then I usually avoid it instead. That being said, there are some things I would like to achieve in 2026:

  • Keep up with my studies. At the start of my degree I found it a little overwhelming with the amount of work immediately thrown my way, so I want to try and keep ahead of the curve as much as I can this year.
  • Knit myself a wearable. Preferably a jumper, but honestly, if I can start, finish *and* block an item for myself this year, I’ll be happy.
  • Decorate my bedroom. This has been on my list for a year, but there’s been a lot else to do in the house since moving in. I have in my head everything I want to do for the room, so I need to just… do it.

Early Riser by Jasper Fforde.

Honestly, I don’t even know how long this has been sat on my shelf. Well over 5 years I think, so it’s high time I picked it up!

I’m not sure what word I hope the year will *be*, but one word I have chosen for the year is present. And you can take that as either meaning, because they both fit.

I want to be present with my friends and family. I want to be present with my learning, I don’t want to miss anything!

I also want to appreciate things like the presents they are. The beautiful place I get to live in. The sunshine. My cats.

  1. Ahh, so happy to see you did this tag, Emma! Love to read your anwers and I am so glad to see I am not the only one who has the same view when it comes to setting goals. It feels like a chore, and I end up not working towards it but rather ignoring it haha. I also have Emily Wilde’s and The Unmaking of June Farrow on my TBR, and I hope to get to at least read Emily’s trilogy this year. Nature’s Ghost is one that I am adding to my TBR. Also, if you do a wearable, please share it! I remember you sent me once your account where you post your knitting as well. Being present is such a good word! I couldn’t agree more, have a lovely day and happy reading ❤
