October Wrap Up

,

Oh, October, how amazing you were for life, but sadly not for reading. Actually, that’s quite dramatic of me – I read some great books, just not many overall!

In October I read 3 books. My lowest total so far this year, but that’s okay. I was so busy with university, and working a lot of extra days that I actually stopped updating my Storygraph regularly. I really couldn’t remember (or be bothered) to go back and do it afterwards, so the pages read/day graph is way off, as it just stuck all pages of a book into one day when I marked them as finished. So ignore that part, but the rest is fine!

My reading was again varied over the few books I read. Slewfoot was the book pick for the general club over on r/Fantasy. I was running it for October and I was initially disappointed that this was the pick, but I actually ended up really liking it.

  • The Salt Oracle by Lorraine Wilson. Set seventeen years after book 1, this one is set on a research ship floating in the sea. Auli is one of those tasked with studying The Oracle, a young girl who can harness the dangerous ghosts that now haunt the world. I love Wilson’s writing, and I really enjoyed this one.
  • Slewfoot: A Tale of Bewitchery by Brom. I did not want to read this one, but since I was running the r/Fantasy club for the month and it was voted for, I had no choice, and I am SO pleased that I was surprised by it. Utterly creepy and pretty violent, this is a tale of Puritan control and the witch and the devil who want to tear it down. Fabulous.
  • Endemic by James Harding-Morris. A non-fiction highlighting some of the plant and animal species that are endemic to the UK, written into anecdotes from the author as he travels the country in search of them. I really loved it!

Little progress was made this month, but never mind.
Both Bingo and Friends Recommend took a halt, but that was a purposeful choice as I wanted to get some publisher mail books read.

October was pretty full on – I genuinely don’t think I had more than three days where I wasn’t busy! University has been great, though I have a lot of deadlines creeping up now. I worked a lot of extra days at the cattery, it was my mum’s birthday and I went up to London for a big yarn and craft show with a knitty friend!

I ended the month with my best friend celebrating Samhain in our own little way with a fire, and soul cakes. Lovely.

A new section! I decided I wanted to keep more track of what I’m posting and general blog happenings. In October, I totally rehauled the design of the blog – I really hope you all like it! I think it looks much nicer. I’ve also made the switch to general image headers for most of my posts now. I might still tweak them, but I’ll probably stick to it since it saves me a lot of time which is necessary now I’m at university!

I’m glad that even if you “only” read three books, you enjoyed them all. They all sound really fascinating. The covers are really quite hauntingly beautiful as well.

They sound interesting and have a sort of hauntingly beautiful cover-scheme going on that I think suits this time of year really well. Hopefully November is a good reading month as well!

    1. Thank you! Procrastination from coursework paid off haha!

There is a sort of coherence to the covers isn’t there. I didn’t notice it before but I see it now! November is the month of non-fiction, I’m excited!
