Reviewing book 8 of a series without spoilers is not going to be easy, so this is more of a gush that I got to read it really…

If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know how much I love the Green Rider series. It was the first fantasy series I truly fell in love with – I read book 1 back when I was 14! Twenty years later, and I have finished an arc of book 8. Little me would be so jealous!

As always, we are following Karigan. Drafted into the Green Riders all those books ago, she now has more responsibility than ever before. Not only does she have her messenger duties, but she is also looking after her family’s merchanting business, and it’s not as easy as it seemed to have been for her father. Outside of her duties, Karigan is forced to face parts of herself she may not want to, and beyond the shores of Sacoridia, other lives hang in the balance…

Karigan is something of a mystical character at this point, though her titles and accolades have not left her unmarred. Despite being a ‘chosen one’, Britain does not let her off lightly, and in this book we are really seeing the results of Karigan’s trials. She is struggling here, and making mistakes, and the reminder that she is just human was both necessary and very well done.

Outside of Karigan’s story, we spend time with Stevic, Laren, Estra & Alton and more characters I won’t name due to spoilers. Though there is a lot going on, we have spent enough time with everyone over the years that they are basically our family at this point, and each of their experiences adds to the overall tapestry of the state of the world. A state that is creeping closer and closer to the release of something we have been anticipating for a while now.

Honestly…. I can’t write more without spoiling things. This series has magic, animal companions, found family, a beautiful setting, an ancient power, politicking and some forbidden romance. We get to watch a fantastic FMC grow from a young girl into a strong, loyal woman, and we also get a whole cast to learn about and love too. Honestly, if you’ve not started this series yet, please just try book 1, Green Rider. I will beg, I have no shame.
