Let’s Talk Bookish: Reading Slump vs Bookish Hangover

Happy Friday! I hope you all have wonderful weekends ahead!

This week, we’re talking about the dreaded reading slump.

We’re going to be short and sweet this week because I have never been in a reading slump. Sorry to be that person! I have, of course, had times where I didn’t pick up a book for a little while, but it’s never been because of a ‘slump’. It’s usually the business of life or some other external situation that means I genuinely don’t have time to read, or I am too tired at the end of the day and go to bed early instead of reading. During those times I want to read, and they usually only happen for very short periods of time. I think that books that would put me in a slump are ones I just DNF because I am not feeling them, so it never gets to that point.

I’ve definitely experienced a book hangover, though only for half a day, maybe a day. I’m not sure how long they’re supposed to be to count – I don’t even know if that short amount of time counts, but I can definitely relate to the feelings of one!

As to how to get out of them… well, the hangovers wear off so quickly that I don’t need to try. I’ve been a reader for so long that eventually it just feels wrong not to be reading. Sorry again, not helpful!
I have seen it said that going back to a comfort read, or a favourite genre can help. I have definitely had moments where I have no idea what to pick up next, and I revert back to my beloved comfort reads for the n’th time!

So… no slumpy books here. Book hangover books though… They’re few and far between, but here we go:

Sistersong by Lucy Holland. I had no idea what to do with myself when I finished this book apart from cry, lol. If you know me by now, then you know that is not usual!

Spells for Forgetting by Adrienne Young. The atmosphere of this book was so dang good that all I wanted was more of it. Sadly, I was on holiday and only had an epic fantasy book to follow up with, so I spent a day avoiding that one!

Water Moon by Samantha Sotto Yambao. Much for the same reasons as above. I seem to get bookish hangovers from books that have particularly atmospheric or whimsical worlds because I love them so much!

The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. This is an odd one, and I’m not sure it counts as an actual book hangover, but I did have to not read anything for at least a day after finishing this book because it was a lot, and I to this day am not sure I fully understand it!

And that’s it. Well, it’s all the ones I can remember at least. I think it helps that my reading is so varied in genre and subject that I always have something new or exciting to pick up.

  1. Thinking back, I guess 2023 was a bit of a reading slump for me – which is a ridiculous thing to say when I still read over 60 books, but that was still noticeably less than usual, and I feel like I spent most of the year not finding books that I was loving (only one 5-star read that wasn’t a re-read that year!). But to this I day I couldn’t tell you what caused it, and when I hot 2024 it was like a switch had flicked, and I was back into my reading groove!

But honestly, I’m not sure that truly counts as a reading slump – I think really I’m probably like you, and have never really been in a slump (although I’ve definitely had book hangovers!).

    1. 60 books is honestly amazing, though unfortunate that only one was a 5 star! Glad you’re back in your groove again though!

Yeah I definitely have never been in a slump. I thin kit’s because I don’t get emotionally attached to things lol.

  3. How does it feel to be a chosen one, Emma? 🤣 I envy you never having experienced a reading slump! I feel like I’ve been in a perpetual floating-slump this whole year due to my MH and the dumpster fire state of our world, lol. Good point on the time frame for hangovers and it’s not one that I’ve seen discussed in any post so far! I’d think that at least like 1-2 days at the least would make sense but I’m sure others could see it differently, lol. I’ve got Water Moon and Spells for Forgetting on my TBR and I can’t wait to read them cos I always love a book that can give me a hangover. 😂

Thanks for joining LTB this week!

    1. Haha! I was worried I’d be really annoying peeps by saying so!

I have a feeling my book hangovers are definitely not the same as other peoples because, well, stone heart over here lol. But I definitely do get short periods of time where reading won’t cut it!

  4. i lowkey have an urge to knock on wood so that you’re not jinxed with a book slump after saying that haha. it’s awesome to hear that your reading is consistent and that you have pauses mostly because of great books!

i’ve had reading slumps here and there, usually because i read too much or my reading tastes are changing but i haven’t found what i want to read instead yet. i’ve found my way back so far though and i agree, after being a reader for so long, not reading doesn’t feel like a thing.

    1. Eek, hahah thank you! Fingers crossed they continue to avoid me!

I have definitely had lulls after reading SO much in one month, but never a full slump. My tastes have also recently changed, but thankfully, I had books that still appealed to me.

I do also think it helps avoid slumps when reading is just a habit.
