Let’s Talk Bookish: Multiple Copies of Books

Happy Friday! I have a lovely weekend ahead of me, driving back to where I used to live to visit some friends. I’ve also switched it up this week and changed to the yellow LTB image. I wanted some more sunshine here!

This week we’re talking about those exciting and elusive 5 star reads.

Short answer: yes I do own multiple copies of some books.

A while back, I spoke about being intentional with my book purchases and how I really consider how many, and what, books I allow myself to buy in physical copy. One thing I neglected to speak about then was owning multiple copies of books. Generally, owning multiple copies of books is something I’ve never been interested in or even considered. There are a few exceptions that I’ll talk about later (and I’m sure you can all guess them anyway!), but for the most part, it’s not something I do.

So what makes me want more than one copy? Well, for a start, I count e-books as a copy of a book. If I read an e-book and I love it so much that I want a physical copy, then I will get one and classify that as having multiple copies of a book.

Of course, we then have the Special Edition. There seems to have been a huge explosion in SE’s in the last couple of years (see: overconsumption above). Do I get tempted every time I see a beautiful book? Of course. Do I buy them all? Absolutely not! In the last two years I have purchased three sets of special edition books where I already owned a copy.

What makes me buy them?
For a start it has to be an all-time favourite book. Nothing less. Secondly, the copies I already own are likely going to be a paperback or standard edition that shows signs of love (read: cracked spines etc). Third, the second copy needs to have something different, and is usually a special edition with exclusive artwork or other detailing that really speaks to me and reflects how I see and feel about the book. Fourth, it also needs to be at least relatively affordable. For example, I covet the Subterranean Press Red Rising books, but not enough to drop £1k on each book.

The other reason I might have more than one copy of a book is not really an answer to this question, but I am lucky enough to be sent a lot of advance reader copies, both physically and digitally. Sometimes the publisher will then send me a final copy too, and in that instance, I will have two copies of the same book. In saying that, I do often give the finished copy to a friend.

So all that said, what books do I own multiples of? I’ll give you all one guess. Yep, it’s Green Rider by Kristen Britain. My favourite series of all time, so of course I had to get The Broken Binding editions when they were announced. The artwork isn’t actually new (it’s the UK covers redesigned), but this series deserves the SE treatment and let’s be honest, I was never going to pass it up. Only the first two books have been done, but that gives me time to make space for the rest!

The Broken Binding have a lot to answer for, because I have two more special edition sets from them! (Well, one is still in production but anyway). They are:

The Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee. I didn’t actually buy these when they were announced. I wasn’t absolutely sure on all the artwork and because of that I couldn’t really justify the price. However, a friend who received these in the subscription later decided they didn’t want them, and that’s when I bought them. Jade War is definitely my favourite cover.

Between Earth and Sky by Rebecca Roanhorse. Now this set is not in my possession yet, but I am so excited for them. This has become a favourite series of mine, and when I saw TBB announce these I gasped. The foiling on the hardcover sold me if I’m honest! The artwork is incredible too, I can’t wait!

Finally, I own multiple copies of Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. This series was what made me fall in love with fantasy (Green Rider notwithstanding). I actually borrowed the first book from the library originally, and then bought the series as e-books when 2 and then 3 released. After that I got them as audiobooks, and then I bought the Illumicrate special editions waaay back when they did them. So actually, this series is the one I own the most copies of!

If we’re on technicalities here, I do currently also have 2 copies of Water Moon by Samantha Sotto Yambao, but I don’t count it since I will be unhauling one. I treated myself to a secondhand copy of the Illumicrate edition because it is so beautiful, and I won’t be keeping my regular edition.

No. I never plan to buy a second copy of any book. As I’ve said, multiple copies are not actually something I think about or consider important. My top series are the ones I have already mentioned above, and other books that I consider all-time favourites, I already own in special editions only, so I don’t feel the need to add to my collection at all right now.

  2. I agree that a multiple copy does need to have something different or special. And to be fair, I can really be swayed by a pretty book. But I very rarely pay over 30 euros for a book. I would have loved a physical hardcover of The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet but the price and exclusiveness on that one was insane. Not ever in a million years.

    1. I have to try really hard to resist all the pretty editions! It is getting easier though. And yes… some of them are just way too expensive!

  3. Omg, £1k for each book?! That’s mad! 🤣 I can’t even fathom something like that although SubPress books are stunning. I admit I’m pretty guilty of contributing to overconsumption, and it’s not always with SE but just regular editions of the book (either from ebook to paperback/hardcover or even audio). But defo not to the extent of having 10 copies of a single book or having a dedicated shelf for them. I’m a little jelly that you got the TBB editions of GBS! They’re stunning but I completely missed out on them and am quite sad about it, haha. I had no idea TBB was doing a SE for Roanhorse’ series though! How exciting 😍 Aah, I can’t wait to see it when you get it! Loved this post and thanks for joining LTB this week.

    1. Yes!! That’s the resale price of them, SubPress is very exclusive… They are gorgeous though, but I think £800ish originally?

I feel like having ebook/paperback copies are generally fine, I will do that too sometimes. It’s more the 10+ physical copies as you said! Only my Green Rider gets a shelf, but it’s 7+ books in the series so it needs it haha. (They’re in my skinny bookcase.)

I’ll definitely share on IG when Between Earth & Sky arrives! I think it’ll be November, a friend is getting them for me and will send them on!

  4. I really appreciated your perspective here—especially how you tied in intentionality and overconsumption. It’s refreshing to hear someone talk honestly about where they draw the line, especially in a time when bookish consumerism can feel a bit overwhelming. I think you made a great point about the difference between wanting to honor a favorite book with a special edition vs. collecting just because there’s a new version out.

Also, I love that Green Rider gets so much love from you! I’ve seen those Broken Binding editions and they’re truly gorgeous—definitely a worthy upgrade for a favorite series. And I totally get the excitement over the Between Earth and Sky set too; that foiling is next-level!

Your thoughts really made me reflect on my own buying habits, especially the question of why I feel drawn to certain editions. I think it’s so valuable that you’re mindful about space, budget, and what actually brings joy versus what might just be hype.

    1. For me, it’s definitely all about honouring the book. At the moment, I don’t think there are any further books or series where I will get multiple copies. I tend to get quite easily overwhelmed with stuff. I do own a lot of books sure, but because they are intentional, they don’t overwhelm, does that make sense?

I’m always glad when I can get others to consider their habits, hopefully in a non-preachy way!
