Let’s Talk Bookish: Literary Palette Cleansers

Happy Friday! After missing last week, I am excited to be back on the LTB train.

This week it’s all about palette cleanser books.

Not often. I am someone who can usually just keep on reading and reading. I have never had a reading slump. There have been times, though, when I have definitely needed a reset or to slow the pace a little. Sometimes I’ll tire of reading so much fantasy, and I’ll feel the need for something cosy, slow or informational instead. Usually this happens when I have a month where I read so much (for me) and I’ll just need to chill out a bit during the next month!

Definitely. Cosy books are usually my go-to for a reset. Something nostalgic like an old favourite, or a short and sweet cosy fantasy or Asian magical realism tend to be what I pull from when it’s needed.

Some of my favourite choices are:
Green Rider by Kristen Britain, my all-time favourite.
A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers.
The DallerGut Dream Department Store by Miye-Lee
Howl’s Moving Castle by Dianna Wynn Jones
The Cat Who Saved Books by Sosuke Natsukawa

Yes! As I have spoken about before, if I am not in the mood to read, I just won’t read. There is never any point in forcing oneself into it, because if you’re like me, you’ll just have a bad time and end up hating whatever it is you’ve picked up. Last week, I took a break from reading, just naturally because I was so busy and couldn’t be bothered to pick up a book even when I did find time. This week, I am back on it. It’s all a flow, and I just go with my mood.

Not particularly, I’ll read them whenever I feel like I need them. I am not a seasonal reader, I don’t do ‘beach reads’ or ‘Christmas reads’ or whatever so my need to ‘cleanse’ is random. Since my palette cleansers are my comfort reads, I guess I reach for them more in the darker months, but not because I need to refresh, I am just a serial rereader lol. I have read Green Rider 8 times now…

  1. Now I need to read Green Rider too! Haha and absolutely one should not force themselves when clearly the mind and body tell you otherwise. It happened to me before and like you said you just end up not enjoying the read.

I wish I had a psychical reset button on me haha

  3. You’re very lucky to have never had a reading slump! I’ve had some pretty terrible ones over the years where I just spent months not knowing what to read (and feeling irritated with myself about it because I want to read, lol)! Thankfully, (knock wood) that hasn’t happened recently although I’ve fought off the slumpy feelings often. I agree that cosy is a great palette cleanser! I think I had Chambers’ book on my list today as well 🙂 Great post and thanks for joining LTB this week!

    1. Ah that sounds like such a pain! I think a lot of us use cosies as palette cleansers because they don’t expect anything from you in return, they’re just here for good vibes haha.

  4. I’ve got the Dallergut Dream Department Store on my beside table, and it’s been there since…March? 😂😂 Lucky you, not getting reading slumps! Great post 💚

  5. I’ve been slumpy in the past that no book seemed to resonate with me. That often had more to do with my mood (depression, anxiety) than any of the books though.
