Let’s Talk Bookish: Romance Tropes

Happy love day to those who celebrate it!
I am actually not one of those people, but I do love a theme and I do love a discussion post so here we are!

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly bookish discussion meme created by Rukky @Eternity Books and co-hosted by Aria @Book Nook Bits and Dini @DiniPandaReads. Each Friday, bloggers will write posts about a particular topic and share on their blog.

For Valentine’s Day, we are talking romance tropes in books.

Prompts: What are your favourite romance tropes? What books would you recommend that have those tropes? Are there any books with those tropes on your TBR? Do you have any least favourite romance tropes?

I am not really a big romance reader. Until last year I actually hadn’t read a romance book since I read Pride & Prejudice as a teenager. However I have been dipping my toes in the genre a little. According to my Storygraph, in 2024 I read 29 books that had the romance tag, though not all of them were romance as a main genre.

As for romance tropes… I still have no idea what I do and do not like. I don’t really know all the tropes to be honest! Looking at my read books, the top two things most of my reads that do feature romance have in common are: LGBTQIA+ romance and witchy romance. I think there’s also a good smattering of grumpy x sunshine and some small-town romance. I’m not sure if the first two are actually tropes, but just go with me here, I am new at this!

The below book collage has books that I have enjoyed that have one or a more of the above mentioned tropes. Book covers that have a heart on them were particular favourites!

As for my tbr… well I am relying on my not-up-to-date Storygraph and Goodreads for this since my books are still in boxes from the move! Again, these are a mixture of the above tropes, and there’s a good number I think since I have found myself actually enjoying a little romance these days.

I don’t think I have any least favourite tropes yet as a novice to the romance genre!

Do let me know if you have any recommendations for books that fit my favourites though!

  2. Great post! I’m a sucker for the grumpy sunshine and small town romance vibes, too. I’m so excited for A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping and I have my fingers crossed that the release date doesn’t get pushed back again. 🤞🏽 Ocean’s Echo was amazing and I highly recommend it! I think I might be re-reading it this year as well as the second book set in that same galaxy. Gods of Jade and Shadow is also incredible!

Thanks for participating in LTB this week! 💜

Ah that’s so good to hear, as soon as my books are unpacked I’ll be putting Ocean’s Echo on the ‘read next’ pile!
