Let’s Talk Bookish: Reading Challenges

Happy Sunday all! I hope you’ve had a fab weekend so far.

Since 2025 is the year I’m trying to work on this blog more, I have decided to jump on the Let’s Talk Bookish train! Before I get into this weeks prompt, a quick note on what this actually is.

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly bookish discussion meme created by Rukky @Eternity Books and co-hosted by Aria @Book Nook Bits and Dini @DiniPandaReads. Each Friday (yes I am late as per), bloggers will write posts about a particular topic and share on their blog.

(I saw this first on Lila’s blog @HardcoverHaven, so thank you Lila!)

This weeks prompt is:

Reading Challenges: Do we love them or hate them?

What do you think of reading challenges—do they motivate you or do they feel restrictive and end up making reading feel like a chore?

If you read my 2025 Reading Plans post, you’ll know that the majority of my year is based around reading challenges. So I love them! I am very type-A, I love a plan and some organisation. On the flip side, I have discovered I am something of a mood reader. Reading challenges and mood reading don’t often go hand-in-hand, but after a few years of figuring it out I have found what works for me.

I used to participate in lots of different monthly reading challenges and I always ended up scrambling at the last minute, or failing them all together. This always made me feel guilty, which is ridiculous because they are meant to be fun and the outcome literally affects nobody, not even myself. Yet I would keep trying them over and over. Turns out I had a case of FOMO. Last year I made the decision to stop participating in monthly challenges and I ended up having my most successful reading year ever through participating only in yearly challenges. Having a big list of books to pick from satisfied my mood-reading tendencies, while checking off the boxes made my brain very happy.

Are there any challenges you participate in yearly?

The one that started it all for me was The Magical Readathon, created by G of Book Roast. This one is suuuuper popular in the fantasy book sphere and it is a lot of fun. I did this one from it’s conception up until last year, when I bowed out, since it primarily revolves around two month-long readathons. It’s premise is that you have a character attending a magical school, and you read books to pass your classes. I keep feeling pulled to go back, but I know that the month format just doesn’t work for me.

The other challenge I have been doing for years now is the r/Fantasy Book Bingo. This is a yearly challenge where you read books to fit 25 prompts and fill out your board. I’ve been doing this since 2018, mostly as a silent participant until the last couple of years where I started to share my reviews on the sub. As a yearly challenge, this one works well for me.

What reading challenges are you joining in 2025?

Aside from Book Bingo mentioned above, I am participating in two more reading challenges.

I’m planning to write more about the challenges individually at some point, so keep an eye out!

Do you enjoy reading challenges? Which will you be taking part in for 2025?

  1. Yes, mood reading can really kill your reading challenge goals!! I’ve had to make myself understand that if I don’t finish it, it’s not the end of the world! It’s been working out a lot. I think G really got many of us into reading challenges!! I love hers. I also learned that a lot of Instagram challenges come with chats for the year. It’s so fun meeting new people and talking about things year long. I’ve come to love that more than the challenge. haha. I wish you all the luck with these challenges!!

    1. Absolutely, it’s taken me over the course of 2024 to not feel bad anymore for not completing things, and seeing my stats at the end of the year was very affirming for it! And 100%, I love the communities that pop up around them all! Good luck with yours too!

  2. I feel ya on being a mood reader making it difficult to complete challenges—I’m the same way. What I do to try and combat that is that for each prompt, I’ll find 5 – 10 books that I’m interested in that fit the requirements, and when the time comes to complete said prompt, I choose from that set. This strategy gives me enough options to trick my mind into thinking I’m still mood reading and prevents me from feeling trapped by a solid TBR. I also just loosely follow challenge guidelines, and have to remind myself that if I need to modify a prompt and/or if I don’t fully complete the challenge, it’s okay because it’s not like there’s any big prize or disappointed team waiting at the end of it all. I’m glad you decided to join in on LTB and I enjoyed reading your post!

    1. Ooh that’s a clever strategy! I hadn’t thought of that before. My brain is already coming up with spreadsheets to figure it out haha.
I’m totally in agreement with modifying or squeezing prompts where possible too. After all it’s jut for fun at the end of the day.
Thank you! I’m happy I found this little corner of the book blogging world!

  4. I’m a bit late on commenting but I’m so excited that you’ve decided to join the LTB! 😍

I’m a mood reader but I also had the same problem as you with the FOMO. I also was very good at making myself feel bad when I didn’t complete a challenge but I’ve (thankfully) let that go in the last few years when I stuck to the Magical Readathon! 😂 I still see challenges and think “ah, I want to give that a try!” but most of the time I’m good at resisting and telling myself no, lol.

I hope you enjoy the challenges you participate in this year and the books you read to complete them! 😃 Happy reading!

    1. Yay, I am so happy to have found LTB!

Ooh me too, I LOVE making a plan and a graphic for a challenge haha. I often make them for all sorts of challenges I come across during the reading year and just that scratches the itch most of the time, rather than doing the reading!

Thank you! Happy reading to you too!
