Let’s Talk Bookish: What do you collect besides books?

Happy Friday! I’m on ‘reading week’ this week and have done a lot of procrastinating, as is the way (I suspect) of all students on holiday…

Yes, and no.

I think I own a lot of books. I definitely don’t own as many books as a lot of people, but it certainly feels to me like I do. I haven’t counted, but I believe I own somewhere between 275 and 325 physical books. I’ve gotten a lot better about not hanging onto books I didn’t particularly like or have no interest in (re)reading, but equally, I’ve been receiving a lot more from publishers at the same time, so I think the number is staying fairly even.

I don’t think of myself as a book collector. Sure, I have a collection of books, but I feel like ‘collecting’ is an entirely separate hobby. To me, being a ‘book collector’ is being someone who buys books for aesthetic or bragging (this isn’t the word I mean but I cannot for the life of me think how to word it better) reasons , and it’s not really something I understand. I mean, I do understand it, but my logical brain doesn’t see the point in collecting stuff you aren’t going to use. I buy a book to read it, not to have it look pretty on my shelf. I hope that makes sense! It’s also not a slight to those who do collect books – do what makes you happy! It’s just not a thing that I will ever do purposefully.

I really enjoy journaling, and that comes with a lovely collection of washi tape. I don’t own excessive amounts, and I do use them, so I’m not entirely sure if it counts, but it’s the first thing I thought of! Probably because I’ve been meaning to organise them this week… My journaling is literally keeping a daily journal; I don’t do loads of ephemera or anything like that, just a bit of washi so I let myself buy it when I see a roll I like.

I’m not the biggest fan of ‘stuff’ so I don’t really have much of a collection of anything else, though I guess my next largest collection is yarn. I’m a knitter, and having a ‘stash’ kind of comes with the territory! That being said, my stash is all yarn I actually have plans and projects lined up for, I don’t buy yarn without a purpose!

  1. I think it’s a great distinction a lot of people are making this week between having books and collecting them! I also have a TON of books and don’t think I “collect” them. I end up with them because I want to read them, but I don’t see that as “collecting” them.

    1. The want to read is exactly why I buy a book too. I do have special editions, but I also read them, so to me even that doesn’t count as collecting!

  3. Great post, Emma! I think I always end up buying my books with the intention of reading them, but then that switches up quickly as a mood reader. I like the idea of knowing the books are there, if the mood strikes again. That’s how I feel like it ends up being a collection. 😂 I also do like them looking pretty on my shelf and I love the idea of how things will look once I set up a proper library room in my house!

I used to be obsessed with journalling but fell out over the past couple of years. I had a huge collection of washi tape (that I also used to use) but thankfully, I could pass it on to my sister who journals and makes use of them so it doesn’t feel wasteful, lol. I hope one day you’re able to build up your collection of ferns 🙂

    1. This is definitely something that is happening to me more and more over the last 6 months as I become more of a mood reader! I still don’t think I’m a collector though, especially as I know people who buy antique books and stuff purely to own them. Maybe my interpretation of what a book collector is, is very different to the norm?

Journaling is something that I’ve gone back and forth to for ages, but it’s been a consistent hobby for over a year now, so I feel okay to buy a lot of tape haha.

I hope you can get your library room one day soon!

  4. Great to know that you are a journaler too! Also, I can’t for the life of me get a book 😀 I am guilty as charged for cover shopping, hence I ended up with 1000+ ebooks LOL. Same, I have threads you have yarn! So nice to see what people like and enjoy other than books 🙂 Ferns are beautiful!

Not sure what I prefer yet, but hopefully will find out next month 🙂

    1. Ooh yes the cover buy is a hard one to resist haha! I didn’t actually count my e-books for this, but I know I don’t have many, maybe 80 in total? I know for sure I have exactly 23 unread e-books though!

  5. I definitely ‘collect’ books in that if I enjoy a book, I like to own it, even if I didn’t buy it before reading (e.g. if it’s something I got from the library and I gave it 4+ stars, I’m likely to want a copy for myself). But for me it’s part of ‘home-making’, I think. I moved around a lot growing up, so the items I fill my home with are what is part of making it feel like ‘home’, and having books displayed in particular always gives me a great feeling. I do get rid of books I didn’t enjoy, or that I don’t think I would enjoy now and don’t have huge sentimental attachment to, and I also reread and lend books to other people, so they’re still ‘in use’, but this does mean I have quite a lot of books.

On a similar note, I like to collect tea and teaware – of course, I use it all, but by the point you’re at over 10 teacups, it does really become a collection. This started partially because of my degree and focusing on premodern East Asian history where tea is obviously a major thing – so a bit like your fern collection idea, might just come with the territory.

    1. Yes that is how I view my book collection too, though not for the same reason. If I read a book I truly love, then I do want it in physical form because I often reread them and tab them up etc. So that again comes down to ‘I am actively using this object’. Obviously that’s not to say that I don’t have books I’ve never read, because I do. I have some beautiful TBB editions of books I have adored. I just don’t ever want excess, and one day I will probably read those copies.

Huh… maybe I do own a mug collection then, lol. I like mug, people buy me them as gifts all the time!
I’d love to see your collection one day, I imagine you have some really interesting ones thanks to your studies (which by the way sounds AMAZING, and I’d love to know more!!!)
