Let’s Talk Bookish: Reading With Friends

Happy Friday! Fun fact: it has rained heavily every single day so far this year where I live.

I really love a group read. I don’t participate in many, purely because my book choices are not often mainstream, but when I find people who do want to do a group read, I love it! As for buddy reading, I think I have done two. I am not a great buddy reader on the whole.

What I love about group reads is the range of approaches to a book you get. Most of my group reads are non-fiction, and I always find it so interesting how different people interpret books, or parts of books. We are all from different backgrounds, and everyone always takes something different away from the books. Being a scientist, I often approach my non-fiction in a very logical way, seeing what I can learn and evaluating how the knowledge has been delivered. I love hearing from people who aren’t in science, because they always see something I don’t, often connecting emotionally rather than logically.

My ideal is a small-ish group. As I said, I really enjoy seeing a range of interpretations and opinions, but I find a larger conversation overwhelming. I would say around 10 people is probably the maximum group number I feel comfortable in, but I have also found the platform the read is happening on plays a large role in this.

A lot of the reads I am a part of happen on Discord. I tend to find them much easier, even if the group is large, purely because it tends to move a bit slower, and people take more time to write out their thoughts. A platform like Instagram immediately overwhelms me, as it moves so fast and tends to be filled with quick, spur-of-the-moment exclamations.

I’d love to try some 1-1 reads sometime, I think I would enjoy them with the right book. I tend to either binge-read or take ages, though, which often isn’t ideal for a buddy read!

  2. I fully agree that smaller groups are my cuppa. It’s funny because Leslie and I are running a massive group read right now, but it seems to be that only a few people are dominating the conversation and I suppose everyone else (myself included) is mostly lurking in the background, lol. It’s definitely not as easy to coordinate discussions with such massive groups! I do enjoy seeing how people read/interpret things differently and how they come up with different theories too, lol.

I’ve never figured out Discord and perhaps that’s why I get bummed when I hear of quite a few book groups/chats are done through that platform. Maybe I need to give it a better go, because I feel the FOMO! 😂

Great post and thanks for joining LTB this week!

    1. I’m in your DCC group! I think I’ve sent maybe 3 messages in total though because it’s so overwhelming!
I’m in a few Discords, I love them! I find them so much easier to navigate since you can keep discussions of different things separate and catching up isn’t quite the task it seems to be on IG (at least for me).

  3. I’m probably more suited to a group read-a-long because I’m the same as you – take ages or read all at once, but I do buddy read books with friends sometimes… I’m just not very good at it.

Also – do you happen to live on the west coast by chance xD

    1. I once did a buddy read with a friend and finished the whole book in 3 hours, lol. I am a terrible buddy reader!

I am on the (south) west coast of England, not the US!

      1. I did mean UK west coast hehe since I’m also in the UK I just assumed west coast = UK west coast xD I’m east coast and we haven’t had that much rain even up here in Scotland, so that’s why I was guessing West coast hehe.

      2. Ahh nice! I usually assume most people are in the US haha. Yeah I’m all the way down in Cornwall, so it’s just rain, rain and more rain at the moment. I think it’s the wettest few months the county has had in a very long time.

  4. Yes I also prefer smaller groups, even more so with people I already kind of know. Feeling safe is also very important.
