Let’s Talk Bookish: Quotes & Excerpts

Happy Friday! I have a busy couple of weeks coming up, so most of my posts will be pre-scheduled, and I apologise in advance if I am slower at getting to your comments!

This week, we’re talking about book quotes and whether or not we like to share them.

I have historically not used quotes in my reviews. Perhaps the odd one here and there when I remembered one that was particularly lovely or relevant to what I was saying, but it was never something that I made sure to do. I’m one of those people who immediately forgets most of the content of a book when I close it, so unless I actually take the time to meticulously note quotes down I they are gone from my brain forever.

When I have included quotes in my reviews, I would only include one. I write my reviews for Instagram since that is my primary platform, and there is a character limit for posts there. Quotes don’t usually fit into that limit so I don’t tend to use them.

The above being said, you would think this answer would be no. However, recently I have actually been making an effort to pick a quote from the books I have read to share. You won’t have seen them in my reviews on this blog though, as I have been putting them on a second image on my Instagram reviews like the example below:

I’ve been enjoying trying to be more purposeful with noting when I read something I particularly like, or that I think represents the book really well.

Question for you all: shall I include the quotes on the blog too? If yes do you like the images or shall I add them as text?

As for excerpts, I don’t think I will ever share a full excerpt from a book anywhere, unless I am specifically asked to as part of a collaboration or tour post.

I think so, yes. Quotes give an idea of the type of writing and language in the book. For example, I really love atmospheric fiction, and I have definitely been influenced to look at certain books from reading quotes that made me think the book would contain buckets of atmosphere. I rarely see quotes for non-fiction books, though, but I am sure they would influence me too, if I thought it sounded like the author was truly passionate about their subject.

  2. Great post! I agree that quotes can entice people to read something, especially if you see that the writing style suits you, or if the quote that’s shared is particularly humorous or charming, that works on me! I also like including quotes on Instagram—I feel like it’s just more appealing visually! Thanks for joining LTB this week 🙂
